HTC One Max: Big just got Bigger

This year is, possibly, HTC’s last chance to make a comeback and stay in the Android race in 2014. The company’s HTC One was an extremely good phone with almost no shortcomings. It was a really great phone and it continues to be one. The hoopla around the HTC One has died down int he tech circles, but the phone is still selling well among Android consumer and is right now the best alternative to the iPhone for those that are thinking of changing their platform of choice. HTC released a One mini for the smaller handed demographic that also wanted a cheaper phone that they could use. So here they were, they had a small budget phone, a mid-sized flagship, so what were they missing? A really, really big ‘One’ As a result the HTC One Max makes its way onto the scene with a BIG footprint.

The One Max has a really big 5.9-inch display that makes even the 5.7-inch screen on the Note 3 look small. This screen is just plain massive and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) which gives us a more stretched and lower 373 PPI compared to the normal 4.7-5 inch phones. The pixel density is still perfectly good as it’s still way more than you can see with your eyes. The One Max keeps the really great Super LCD 3 panel that has excellent color reproduction, viewing angles and decent out door visibility. It’s a great display but has been overtaken by that of the LG G2. It’s just a really solid display that you can’t go wrong with. The design is exactly that same as the all aluminum design of the HTC One, which is honestly the best you can get now. The phone is thicker at 10.3mm and heavier also at 207g. The only differences are the plastic rim, that runs around the glass and aluminum windows on the front, and the finger print reader under the UltraPixel camera.

One Max Fingerprint

The HTC One Max has a fingerprint reader on its back underneath the camera. It’s an optical sensor so it doesn’t have all the fancy new print imaging tech in the iPhone 5s, so naturally it doesn’t work as well. You still have to swipe across it for it to read your print and it doesn’t have all the fancy hard are architecture to protect your fingerprints like the iPhone does. These phones are yet to implement ARM’s new v8 instruction set that has better security features. The Max still uses an older Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, which is surprising as HTC decided to omit a newer Snapdragon 800 chip that the Note 3 and LG G2 use. It’s just a confusing omission that would’ve made the phone better. There’s still a good amount go RAM at 2GB. The battery got a whole lot bigger which is the advantage of a big phone: more space for a bigger battery. The battery is now rated at 3300mAh, that’s 1000 mah more than the 2300 rating on the HTC One. This can easily get you almost 2 full days of slid use for your phone. It’s super useful for power users. HTC also announced a power case that sells for $90 and gives you an additional 1200 mAh of battery. The phone comes with 32GB storage standard in the US with a 16GB standard for everyone else. Here’s the best part: the back of the One Max is removable. You can remove the back and add a microSD card up to 64GB . That’s big thing but sadly that battery is till non-removable because HTC manufactures that phone with the battery sandwiched between the display and logic board. The phone has 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and 4G LTE bands for US, Europe and Asia. The phone runs Android 4.3 with Sense 5.5, which is just a more polished version of Sense 5. HTC has kept those insane stereo BoomSound speaker that have even larger chamber so the sound is even louder and better this time.

The camera is still a 4-megapixel UltraPixel sensor that has those nice big 2.0µ pixels that allow amazing low light performance. The camera’s optical image stabilization has been removed. The camera is decent but still not as good as the 8MP and 13MP shooters out there on the market. The front still has a 1.9MP camera that takes decent photos. Both of them shoot solid 1080p footage with ease. The camera app also has a plethora of features that you can use including Zoes and others.

One Max Design

The HTC One Max has a lot going for it but it could’ve been the perfect hardcore use phone and also a solid competitor to the Note, but right now the phone’s dimensions are too much to put off with ease. The phone will come in the same black/slate and white/silver as the One. It will retail for $299 on contract and $700 off-contract.
